Aged Liniment

Aged liniment is now available, aged liniment like Dit Da Jow and Iron Palm have been aged 4 years plus and sold in 4 ounce glass bottles. Aged liniment allows you to purchase and use right away, if you are preparing your own liniment at home you can start using right away as you wait until your home batch is ready.

What is Aged Liniment?

What is Aged Liniment? it is an herb or a blend of herbs that have been soaking in distilled alcohol for a period longer than 3 years. The longer the herbs are soaking the stronger the liniment becomes. Generally you only can purchase this type of aged liniment from specialty companies and not over the counter at CVS or similar drugstore.

We sell aged liniment in glass bottles and we have them listed below, what makes ours a little special is that we fill each bottle from the main aged jar before it is shipped out so it is not sitting around waiting for a customer, this guarantees you get a truly aged liniment from the aged source the minute it is ordered.

We will not get into the properties of each one in this post as we have dedicated pages explaining each one of them, you can click each one to be directed to a new page to read if you wish.

Advantages

The main advantage of course is you can use it right away, if you sprain your ankle or receive a trauma type injury you do not have time to make a liniment and use the same or next day. The second advantage is that an aged liniment has stronger healing powers than one that has not been aged, there is one exception to this and we will explain the best we can further down this post.

While buying aged liniment is great, let us not forget that it costs more and if you use a lot, it can add up dollar wise. The best way to balance this out especially if you need to use aged liniment right away and plan to use it long term is to purchase a herbal liniment kit and a glass bottle of aged liniment.

Creating an Aged Liniment Faster

While that sounds contrarian it is achievable, since this for external use only and you are not trying to make it taste good with age, we are mainly concerned with extracting all the alkaloids and molecular compounds from the herbal blend of herbs.

This is done by the process of maceration as we soak the herbs in  a large glass jar an using alcohol, typically in the 40% range. Creating that aged liniment in a shorter period of time is done by a technique called agitation, by shaking the jar often agitates the herbs forcing them to release all the healing compounds into the alcohol.

Aged Liniment Done Properly

Doing this properly will create a liniment that heals like an aged liniment but in a shorter time period. So how is it done properly? We shake the jar slowly, either back and forth or up and down. This is done anywhere from one to two minutes twice daily for the first 21 to 30 days. Doing this speeds up the extraction process 20 fold.

What does that mean? If you just added the herbs, then the alcohol and set your jar in the closet and did nothing for two years it might not be as strong healing wise as the jar that was shaken twice daily as described for 30 days, that’s how powerful agitation is.

You can also apply  advanced methods we describe here. These methods help speed up extraction but there is nothing better than shaking your jar unless of course you have access to a laboratory with all the fancy equipment. Since 99.9 percent of us do not have access to a lab we will not be disappointed with the results achieved by shaking the jar often the first 3-4 weeks.

Laws of Diminishing Returns

When a liniment is aging their are the laws of diminishing returns that come into play. It is difficult to explain but basically as the herbs are being extracted, the alcohol absorbs all the alkaloids and compounds, but as this absorption process unfolds the alcohol starts to slow down the amount of compounds it absorbs through extraction.

So depending on the amount of herbs and alcohol used, the process can slow down to a snails pace and you might not see or feel much difference between a 4 or 5 year old aged liniment.

Agitation of the jar often gets you to that point of diminishing returns faster so your 30 day liniment might not be much different healing wise than a 2 year old liniment that was just sitting on a shelf with no shaking.

Conclusion

So in conclusion purchasing an aged liniment has its advantages but so does purchasing a kit and shaking your jar often. If preparing a liniment kit at home is not something you are interested in then purchasing an aged liniment is the right choice. Always make sure you purchase an aged liniment in a glass bottle as plastic can leach chemicals into the liniment which then gets absorbed into the body.

Also avoid any aged liniment prepared with rubbing alcohol as that can be toxic with extended use. I hope this article was helpful, f you have any questions or comments we would love to hear from you.
