By Dr. Nico,
I get asked all the time about Dit Da Jow that is made with Western herbs instead of Chinese herbs. Even though authentic Dit Da Jow was created by Chinese Herbalists there is one particular formula created here in the west. The American Indian used herbs for healing all types of illnesses and injuries with great success. As settlers migrated here from Europe they had there own healing herb recipes past down to them or from sources like Nicholas Culpeppers book the Complete Herbal.
Over time they blended their recipes with some incredible healing herbs used by the American Indians and created the American version of Dit Da Jow and that is what we offer.

The kit pictured above makes over one gallon of the powerful American Dit Da Jow liniment.
Make At Home
If you want a high energy kit for injuries, inflammation, bruises, pain, tendinitis and arthritis relief then the American Dit Da Jow Herbal liniment is what you should have, this aromatic formula is powerful and easy to make. This liniment works almost instantly after applied and you can use it as often as you wish without any side effects.
The American Dit Da Jow liniment kit is a powerful blend of herbs weighing over one pound and can be made at home for pennies on the dollar as compared to the over the counter liniments you find at your local drugstore, plus they don’t come close to the healing power of this formula.
Major Benefits Of American Dit Da Jow
- Great for bruises
- Reduces swelling from injuries
- Stops muscle spasms
- Relieves muscle pain and muscle soreness
- Reduces inflammation in joints
We offer this kit in various sizes which you can see further down this article but first let me explain briefly the difference between a eastern formula and a western formula.
The Main Difference Between East and West Herbal Formulas
Chinese herbal formulas usually consist of 6 or more herbs and each herb will be classified as either the main or mother herb followed by the assisting herbs, then the supporting herbs and lastly the conducting herbs. This is referred to using the herbs Energetically . In Western herbal formulas you can have the same categories or just use one herb to heal, this is referred to as symptomatically.
An example would be Aloe, you can use it by itself as a gel or liquid for burns or in Ayurvedic medicine the gel is considered a important tonic for the female reproductive system. Aloe powder is a strong purgative and can used by itself or you could combine it with other herbs for constipation issues or for anti-inflammatory conditions.
Most of us have taken Echinacea to help with cold or flu conditions or possibly Valerian Root to calm ourselves down or to help us sleep and lastly we have a headache and we take White Willow Bark which is what the aspirin was derived from.
These single herbs help us with the condition we have and do a pretty good job. Chinese herbal medicine works on a slightly different methodology in healing. The question is asked why do we have a cold or flu or why am I getting headaches, there could be underlying issues causing these problems and you must get to the root of the problem to completely heal. If you keep getting headaches it could be liver congestion, or a imbalance in the body, if this is the case a aspirin will not heal you.
So when we are talking about our American Dit Da Jow we are using both methodologies, one using the symptom based philosophy and two, the energetic philosophy. Dr. Michael Tierra talks a formula in his book “Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine” that combine both approaches to healing bruises, sprains, arthritis and other pain issues and I am going to discuss this below.
One type formula is called the Kung Fu Medicine, the formula consists of the following:
- Angelica 2.5 tablespoons
- Comfrey Root 2.5 tablespoons
- Cinnamon Bark 1 tablespoon
- Valerian Root 1 teaspoon
- Hyssop Leaves 1 teaspoon
- Safflower 1.5 teaspoon
- Calendula 1 teaspoon
You can also add Myrrh 1 tablespoon and Cayene 1/4 teaspoon if you want to help with sore muscles.
Like most liniments, vodka is used for extraction, 80 proof works the best. You can also use Gin if you happen to have it on hand.
The following recipe is taken from a formula Dr. Michaels Herb Shop sold over 50 years ago.
For those not familiar with Dr. Michaels he was a very famous and popular herbalist in Chicago, who had one of the best herb shops in the Midwest and was widely recognized as one of the best herbalists in the country.
We sell the original Dr. Michaels American Dit Da Jow recipe, but we offer it in various sizes and we make it a lot stronger by using a higher quantity of herbs that are listed below and by adding Comfrey Root, just like Dr. Michaels and the American Indians. Comfrey Root is a very powerful healing herb which is discussed further down this article. This recipe uses mostly western herbs but also has three herbs common in Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Directions for Making The American Dit Da Jow Recipe
These are the directions for producing up to 28 ounces of liniment:
Place all of the herbs in a glass mason jar (at least 16 ounces).
Pour boiling water to just dampen all of the herbs. (This step is optional but helps to draw out the beneficial properties of the herbs)
Fill the rest of the jar (or the entire jar if not using hot water too) with alcohol (drinkable, at least 80 proof) and stir with a clean spoon.
Put the lid on the jar. Store the jar in a cool/dry place, shaking daily, for at least three weeks and up to six months. (I usually leave herbs for six weeks)
Strain through cheesecloth and compost the herbs. Store the tincture in colored dropper bottles or clean glass jars.
Use on skin as needed to help with bruises, sore muscles and pain. Do not use on cut or broken skin.
I personally do not strain the herbs, allowing the herbs to soak makes a stronger and more potent liniment.
Below is a picture of some American Dit Da Jow I use, this liniment is excellent for all types of joint pain, bruises and sore muscles plus it smells great.

Below is a breakdown on some of the herbs in the kit.
Comfrey
Symphytum officinale
MEDICINAL: A poultice of comfrey heals wounds, burns, sores, and bruises. Internally it is a powerful remedy for coughs, ulcers and asthma. Used as a liniment it is used for healing broken bones, sprains, bruises and pain management. Large dosages and excessive amounts taken internally can cause liver damage, so more is not better when taken internally. Taken as directed by your health care practitioner is advised. When used internally, it is best and safest to use a tea, rather than capsules.
RELIGIOUS: Carrying comfrey during travel will ensure your safety. Put some in your luggage to prevent it being lost or stolen. It will also bring luck to the carrier.
GROWING: Comfrey prefers well-drained soils and partial shade. It grows from Canada to Georgia, as far west as Missouri, in the wild. It is a perennial that grows to 3 feet high. It can be started from seed, but you will be more successful with cuttings. Once established, it will spread vigorously. Harvest leaves when the flowers bud, and roots in the autumn after the first frost.
Plantain
Plantago lanceolata, P. major
MEDICINAL: Plantain is used to clear mucous from the body, and to neutralize poisons. As a mild tea it is used to treat lung problems in children, and as a stronger tea is used to treat stomach ulcers. It is also used for diarrhea, bladder infections, and for treating wounds and injuries.
RELIGIOUS: Plantain is hung in the car to guard against evil spirits.
GROWING: Plantains are common weeds, some varieties being annual and some perennial. They are found in all soil types, and prefer full sun.
Horsetail
Equisetum arvense
MEDICINAL: Horsetail is used in treating urinary tract infections. It aids in coagulation and decreases bleeding. It will also help broken bones heal faster, and will help brittle nails and hair, due to its high silica content. It has also been used as part of a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The plant alone, boiled in water, makes an effective foot soak for tired feet, or for the treatment of athlete’s foot. Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
RELIGIOUS: Whistles made from the stalks of Horsetail are used to call the spirits.
GROWING: Horsetail needs swamps and damp places to grow, in full sun to partial shade. It grows to 1 – 2 feet tall. The plant itself is used in healing.
Nettle
Urtica spp.
MEDICINAL: The plant is used for treating high blood pressure, gout, PMS, rheumatism, and ending diarrhea, scurvy, liver and prostate problems. Externally it is used as a compress to treat neuralgia and arthritis. It is a very high source of digestible iron. It also treats anemia, fatigue, edema, menstrual difficulties, eczema, enlarged prostate (especially when combined with Saw Palmetto), urinary tract problems, hay fever and allergies. It is very supportive during pregnancy. Use the infusion as a hair rinse to treat dandruff and to stimulate hair growth.
RELIGIOUS: Sprinkle nettle around the room to protect it. It is also burned during ceremonies for exorcism. Stuffed in a poppet and sent back to the sender of a curse or bad spell, it will end the negativity. Nettles gathered before sunrise and fed to cattle is said to drive evil spirits from them.
GROWING: As nettle is considered a bothersome weed, it is best to purchase this herb from a store. The spines on a nettle plant can cause painful stinging, so it is not a good idea to include it in your herbal garden.
Angelica
Angelica archangelica
The botanical name of angelica points to the highly prized status of this northern European herb in the past. A warming tonic that is good for both poor digestion and weak circulation, angelica is also an excellent remedy to support recovery from chronic illness and to revitalize a delicate digestive system.
The root’s warming and stimulatory action upon the heart and circulation improves the blood flow throughout the whole body, making it useful in
problems such as cold hands and feet, chilblains, and fibromyalgia.
Arnica
Arnica montana
Widely used in both herbal and homeopathic medicine, arnica’s vivid yellow flowers make an excellent remedy for aches and pains of all kinds.
Key actions Analgesic (relieves pain)
• Anti-inflammatory • Wound healer consistency means that it works like the
body’s own mucus to reduce discomfort and inflammation.
Other uses The leaf is preferred for urinary tract problems such as mild cystitis. The flower soothes the skin and contains high levels of antioxidants.
Injuries Quick and effective in easing bruises, sprains, and sports injuries, arnica’s pain-relieving properties also make it valuable in healing wounds following an operation or dental treatment.Caution must be used when taken internally, externally no problems.
Calendula flower (Calendula officinalis; Asteraceae) has a neutral energy, is slightly acrid and bitter, and enters the Liver, Heart, and Lungs. It has emmenagogue, diaphoretic, alterative, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, analgesic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and astringent properties.
In today’s commercialized herbal world, calendula is mainly known for granulating flesh and healing all sorts of skin complaints such as inflammations, dermatitis, cuts, bruises, diaper rash, sore nipples, strains, lesions, minor burns, herpes sores, eczema, boils, itching, insect stings, shingles, erysipelas, lacerated perineum, and slow-healing wounds and ulcers. It is also known to promote the ripening and completion of eruptive skin diseases such as measles. For these it is used as a poultice, lotion, compress, or mouthwash, although its fresh succus (juice) may be topically applied as well and its oil can be directly inserted into the ear for earaches.
I hope this article was helpful and if you have any questions just shoot me a email and I will reply as soon as I can.
