Winters for most of the country can produce low humidity in the air making it very dry, so using Dit Da Jow and dry skin go hand in hand (no pun intended). Combine that with The furnace in your home running on and off during the day and probably more so during the evening and overnight hours and you have very dry conditions causing ones skin to be extremely dry. For some of us when we use Dit Da Jow the alcohol in the Jow dries out the skin even further.
The best way to treat this is to apply the Dit Da Jow as usual but after 30 minutes to an hour apply some oil right over where you applied the Dit Da Jow. Some good oils to use are Almond Oil, Emu Oil, Jojoba, Coconut Oil and Olive Oil just to name a few. Do not use any synthetic oils or moisturizing creams that are loaded with chemicals that might cause more harm than good. Look for non-pore clogging oils, besides what was mentioned above Avocado oil and Primrose oil fall into this category.
Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labeled as “night creams” are oil-based.) You can also look for lotions containing “humectants,” a class of substances like glycerine.
Apply as often as necessary to alleviate the dry skin. Waiting 30 minutes to and hour after your Dit Da Jow application allows time for the liniment to be absorbed into the skin. If possible do not to wash the area you applied your Dit Da Jow, this allows the oil to help with absorption of any Dit Da Jow that has dried on the skin.
One important point to remember is the skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.
To prevent dermatitis it is very important to apply oil when using Dit Da Jow or other alcohol based liniments on a regular basis, we have an article HERE that explains the proper steps to take.
